The Return of Godzilla (1984) - Toho's Heisei Comeback!! (June 2013)

It was Christmas, 1996, I had ordered 5 Godzilla titles on NTSC VHS. These tapes came from the tapes through a specialist in the states in which my uncle got for me. The films I had purchased were Gojira (1954), King Kong vs Godzilla (1962), Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995) & The Return of Godzilla (1984). These were part of my Xmas presents with a new NTSC/PAL stereo video recorder. The Return of Godzilla (1984) was the film I wanted to see so badly and had the Dark Horse/Manga graphic novel in which I turned the pages scene-by-scene as I inserted the VHS tape into my new machine for the festive holiday!

Ninety-odd minutes later I remember thinking, this film is outdated and nothing like the comic book, but I was wrong! What I had just watched was the revival of Godzilla for the 80s/90s (A decade late, I know), but I had watched this film subconsciously growing up somewhere else. In the mid 80s, The Return of Godzilla went to video rental stores as Godzilla 1985 starring Raymond Burr edited into the US scenes. When I was younger, I didn't have a clue about Raymond Burr or who he was, but I always remember the scene in which Godzilla (the child-known character) falls into the volcano pit at film's conclusion... vivid and haunting!

After nearly thirty years of it's release, The Return of Godzilla (1984) is a classic! It features serious scenes of destruction with atmospheric photography - you can feel the burning air and dust caused by Godzilla... What a great stand alone film in the Mighty G series known as Heisei. There may be less action and less monster battles unlike the classics, but the human drama always intrigued me in this film. Reporter Goro Maki is attacked on a Japanese fishing boat found at sea, by a giant sea louse (Shockirus) from Godzilla, the tension between Russia and the USA, the missile launch, etc!

The film is now thirty years old and it is the only Godzilla movie not to be released on dvd or blu ray in the states. However, click HERE for the Japanese Blu Ray - but, be warned it doesn't contain English subtitles what so ever! I have purchased this film on Laserdisc, VHS, VCD and Blu Ray over the years and I never tire of it! It's a stand alone Godzilla film which has reached a cult mass in obscurity and of it's original time setting.

The Japanese Blu Ray from Cd-Japan!
A great film, an emotional ending to a come back long over due in a nine-year hiatus from Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975). A great musical score and a Legend of a Kaiju Monster who has come back to stomp all over Tokyo, again... returning to darker roots e.g.:- Gojira (1954) style! If you can pick this film up, then do so... it holds a very special place in my dvd/blu-ray collection and even on VHS, so thanks to my uncle for helping me obtain this film, almost 20 years ago! Godzilla vs Biollante (1989) followed in a sequel.

BREAKING NEWS: Kraken Releasing is bringing the dvd and blu-ray to home media on 13th, September, 2016 in the USA. Please, check Amazon Details for the retail price and sale.

Zombies... everywhere these days!! Wasteland (2013) is Coming!! (June 2013)

Me as a zombie on a final shoot for the indie horror film, Wasteland (2013) - coming very soon from Light Films, Ltd. Scott Miller (Shameer Madarbakus), a man carving his life out of a world torn apart by an 'infection' that has almost totally wiped out the human race. His days are spent finding water, food and avoiding the dangers that lurk outside while he waits for the return of Beth (played by Jessica Messenger), the love of his life.

WASTELAND, a story of man's journey as he fights to survive, to find hope, to find purpose within this new world. What is there left when all hope is gone? What kind of life is there? Will Scott give up or will he look for something bigger, will he look for a meaning, will he look for hope? Oh, and there are Zombies! Film also stars Mark Drake who has appeared on Game of Thrones (2013).
